Call for Western Downs Regional Artists Call for Western Downs Regional Artists

 Crossroads: to the future

We are pleased to invite artists living within the Western Downs Regional Council to apply for selection in the Dogwood Crossing @ Miles Western Downs local artists’ exhibition for 2010.

This exhibition will showcase selected artists, who live in the Western Downs Region and who will respond to the theme Crossroads: to the future.

The theme…

The theme reflects the rapid growth and a shift in social and economic composition our region is experiencing due to the dramatic increase in the natural resource sector. As our region develops from a traditional agricultural base our community is changing.

The Dogwood Crossing @ Miles Art Gallery Committee endeavours to develop and present an exhibition, including supporting public programs, which have two major objectives: to develop and support regional visual artists; and to engage the community in a conversation about our changing landscapes and social setting.

What we are hoping to achieve…

This exhibition will present an opportunity to acknowledge that our community may be at a crossroads, to make comment and look to the future. The goals of the exhibition include:

· To reveal the diversity of art practice in the area plus examples of high level achievement over the past 2 years.
· Promote healthy competition and growth in the visual arts of the region
· To deepen the communities understanding of the synergy between industry and sustainability.
· To connect people and enhance communication.

The process...

The selection process and creative phase for this exhibition will be more comprehensive than in past Dogwood Crossing @ Miles local artist exhibitions. It will involve an intensive process that we hope will engage artists and stimulate their responses to the exhibition themes, through a variety of activities.

To support artists in the application process we will present an opportunity for artists to develop their skills in developing artist resumes, completing exhibition proposals and addressing application needs through a professional development workshop with Creative Region’s Shelley Pisani.

The exhibition will feature up to 15 artists who will be selected by Dr Anne Kirker, a highly regarded and nationally recognised curator and writer.

The selected artists will be provided with the opportunity to tour relevant natural resource and agricultural sites to further develop their ideas. Artworks may include large/small scale, 3D, 2D, video, paintings, photographs, digital images, assemblage and sculpture.

The exhibition will include a full colour professionally produced and printed catalogue that will be available for sale.

The official opening will take place on 30 July 2010 with the exhibition expected to run until 21 September 2010.
