The Western Downs region dominates Queensland's SuratBasin, an emerging energy and resource area of global significance. One of the fastest growing regions in Australia, the Western Downs Regional LGA experienced a 17.4% increase in Gross Regional Product and a 400% growth in the mining sector during 2008-09.

During 2009 Council undertook a Business Capability Survey in partnership with the Chambers of Commerce and business groups across the Western Downs. Continuing desire from all parties to partner in the development of new economic development projects has led to the formation of the Western Downs Economic Development Task Group (WDEDTG) in February 2010.

The WDEDTG is an overarching task group which presides over three additional working task groups: Business Growth, Infrastructure, Transport & Sustainable Environment and IT, Education & Training task group.

Advance Western Downs was a key initiative of the Western Downs Economic Development Task Group to support economic development, business growth and investment through out the region.

The primary aim of the task group is to advance the Western Downs as the central hub of the resources boom while protecting prime agricultural land, by implementing key economic development initiatives.

The task group is a strategic partnership between the Western Downs Regional Council, local Chambers of Commerce and key business leaders across the region. The group officially formed in March 2010.
