Dalby Recycled Water Plant

The Dalby Recycled Water Plant treats approximately 2 mega litres or 2million litres of household reclaimed water per day of which one third is currently treated to a Class A standard. The Class A recycled water is used to supply water to the Golf Club, Turf Club and South State School for turf irrigation.
Council is upgrading the treatment plant to provide Class A+ recycled water to homes in the Trinity Green Estate via a dual reticulation system and to the Dalby Bio-Refinery upon completion. When recycled water is provided to these two projects the Dalby plant will be recycling approximately 75 per cent of all household reclaimed water.

What is Recycled Water

Recycled water is produced after the advance treatment and filtering of wastewater, resulting in high quality water suitable for non-drinking purposes.

Recycled water is clear and looks and smells just like drinking quality water however it is NOT drinking water approved for human consumption.

Stringent guidelines, regulations, standards and codes of practice are in place for the different uses of recycled water to safeguard public health and the environment.

Classes Of Recycled Water

Recycled water in Australia is classified according to its quality and range of uses. Five classes are used.

ClassificationAcceptable Uses
Class A+Non-drinking urban - toilet flushing, garden watering
Class AOpen space irrigation, some industrial purposes
Class BSome agricultural uses - pasture irrigation, stock watering
Class COpen space irrigation - subsurface or public access restricted
Class DNon-food crop irrigation

Class A+ is the highest quality of the five defined classes of recycled water in Queensland and is the only class available for non-drinking domestic use.

Recycled Water Is Safe

Regular monitoring and reporting is required to ensure the quality of the water being supplied is safe and is fit for its intended use, in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency Queensland Water Recycling Guidelines.

Although Class A+ is for non-drinking purposes the water is treated to a drinking standard and if accidentally consumed will not cause any adverse health effects.

All recycled taps must have removable handles to enable control over usage to prevent children or visitors using recycled water for the wrong purposes.

Cost of Recycled Water

Once A+ quality recycled water is available Council will apply an appropriate per kilolitre charge.

For more information on recycled water charges please refer to water charges.

Domestic Water Recycling

Domestic water recycling such as the recycling of greywater from washing machines, baths, showers and basins on to lawns and gardens can help reduce usage of drinking quality supplies.

More information on greywater reuse can be found under WaterWise.
