Curatorial Talk
with Larissa Warren

Join us for a unique opportunity to hear from Shifting Ground curator Larissa Warren. Larissa will provide insights into the curation process that led to the exhibition being realised. Further, Larissa will discuss the different approaches to contemporary ceramic production seen in the works in the exhibition display.

Larissa Warren is a ceramicist, educator, and art historian. She works from her home studio in an underground bunker on Tamborine Mountain, Queensland. Her research papers and articles are published in the Queensland History Journal, Australiana, Pottery Making Illustrated and Australian Journal of Ceramics.

Her work is included in the permanent collections at HoTA: Home of the Arts, Gold Coast, Art Gallery of Ballarat and the Star Casino, The Darling Tower, Gold Coast.

Larissa’s ceramic practise is driven by a fascination of the minerals and clays underneath, the layers of the earth and how we uncover them.

A descendant of the Migunberri people of Mount Barney, Sarah uses her creative practice to connect with her family and ancestors. In this relaxed and inclusive session, participants will use pre-fired ceramic discs (prepared by curator and artist Larissa Warren) and learn traditional weaving techniques. Sarah will guide the group in preparing and weaving local natural grasses with raffia into the ceramic forms to create personal and culturally rich artworks.

Participation and content

  • These events are a great way to meet fellow parents with young babies
  • We understand that babies sometimes make noise, and that’s perfectly ok
  • Parents and guardians are invited to join in with songs and sensory games to help engage their babies throughout the program. You are welcome to participate or just listen
  • Pram parking will be available at this event
  • The exhibition tour involves walking and standing for short periods of time. We recommend using a baby carrier or sling during this portion of the program, however if you prefer not to carry your baby, prams are also welcome in the gallery spaces
  • Parents rooms are available at Dogwood Crossing

Sensory aspects

  • Please let us know in advance if you or your child are hard of hearing so we can make this tour accessible for you

  • Floor cushions, ottomans and stools without backs will be available during the sensory play session at the end of the program
  • The Gallery air conditioning is set to 21°C to conserve the artworks. We recommend bringing a light jumper or jacket with you
